My successes.

Carlsen now has 65 clients from across the mid-Atlantic region using 85 cloud-based archives. He also recently opened a remote office in northern New Jersey. His total top-line sales are almost $1 million.

What inspired you to start your business?

Through his document storage business, ShoreScan Solutions, Ken Carlsen helps small businesses create and store digital archives using the kind of technology that is usually only available to Fortune 500 companies. This means that small-town historians, finance specialists, and others can easily create searchable archives that are transferable across geographic locations and protected from floods and fires.

Carlsen started ShoreScan Solutions in November 2009, drawing on his more than 20-year career in sales and knowledge of business administration. He provides his customers with specialized on-site attention “to ensure successful deployment and long-term use of the service.”

How SCORE helped.

Carlsen’s SCORE team has helped him with all different aspects of his business. Bill Noll provided needed accountability for taxes, cash flow, and payroll. Meeting with Noll every month has motivated Carlsen to stay on track with state and federal tax requirements. Bart Stolp helped him conceptualize his business and think about long-term growth. Finally, Zane Carter tailored Carlsen’s messaging and marketing.

Carlsen points out that when you work for someone else, there are expectations and accountability built into your job. He says, “Leaving this environment, it’s very easy to get off track, confused, and lose momentum. My SCORE team provided the structure I personally needed (and still do) to perform to an expectation of success.” He adds jokingly “I have often referred to them as ‘My Board’ or in some cases the ‘Firing Squad.’”

Carlsen attributes much of his success to his “board” of mentors, saying “SCORE has been the key element in creating the foundation of the company.”
